New Nintendo Console: Wii U

I just watched Nintendo's presentation at E3 and I have to say I'm very cautiously optimistic (emphasis on cautiously, not optimistic). To be honest I think they did a horrible job with the presentation. You never saw the console, only the controller. They never showed the specs of the console and they didn't show a demo besides a questionable tech demo of a bird. However, they did mention that they have a lot of third party support for the console and announced darksiders, batman arkham asylum, assassins creed, ghost recon and a few other games would be there at launch. Anywhere, here's a couple links.

The console (that they never showed or even mentioned in the presentation)

The controller - Basically a touchscreen/controller that can either be a supplement to the game or if you want you can turn the tv off and play the game on the screen.

    Other links:

I'll link other things as they come up.

Just saw an interview with the EA boss dude (forget his hame or what his title is but he seems like a down to earth gamer)  CEO John Ricctiello and he couldn't stop talking about the Wii U. He was talking about how he would love to see Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U. Basically every developer interview I've seen they talk about how innovative and how creative they can get with the Wii U's contoller. They seem to really love it.

They said the same thing about the Wii, and then proceeded to crap all over it by not providing decent support. I can only hope they hold up this time.

Well the Wii is kind of a weird case. They didn't really crap all over it and most people (most people who bought the Wii in the first place) don't require the same support we do. However, the Wii U seems like it already has the support of big devs, if you look at the titles they announced/showed and keep in mind their release dates, it seems like at least at launch there'll be support.

The thing we should be concerned about though, is how well those games will be integrated. Obviously, none of the ones they showed were designed specifically with Wii U in mind, the same way hardcore games are not designed for Kinect. Sure, this is a full-on gaming console, not just a peripheral, so games need to be even more designed for it. I'm not sure how well that will go because ports of games usually don't really work that well, but you know... it could turn out well enough.

Color me cautiously optimistic as well...  They are taking a big step by having one online ID and friend's list, and making overtures toward the "hardercore" players (though I still hope to see a NEW and INNOVATIVE entry into the Animal Crossing series...)

Don't F&#% this up with shovelware now, guys...

I totally agree with you about animal crossing. I played the first one (I think it was the first one) back when I rented it (I think I rented it) on my old gamecube and really loved it. I think the fact that you had to play it every day to take care of your little town and keep up with the neighbors but didn't have to spend long with it really appealed to me. I've tried to play a newer version of it though and I was totally bored and kind of turned off by it.

This is a short commercial like presentation of how the Wii U works with Ghost Recon. I'm not a fan of this type of game but I imagine if I were I'd be flipping out at the coolness right now.

The more I see about the Wii U the more impressed I become...I think it's growing on me.

So far those are mostly all prototypes though... I don't necessarily trust the Ghost Recon thing. I'm all for a unified "gamertag", but then again this wasn't confirmed. The Ghost Recon guys want it to be done for their game, but Nintendo decides whether they do it or not console-wide.

One look at that controller and I am completely turned off by the new Wii. I will not even consider buying it because of that controller. It looks incredibly unwieldy and I don't need a 6 inch screen on my controller. Something like the dreamcast had would be fine, but that screen is just too much. To give a reference of what I think a controller should be like, the xbox 360's controller is nearly perfect.

I'm sure people thought horses were nearly perfect prior to the horseless carriage.

The Wii U looks intriguing, but really holds no interest to me until I see some games - cuz that's what it boils down to, right? I'll withhold judgment on the controller until I have it in my hand, but initial observation leaves a sour taste in my mouth, just not what I'm used to.

I would find new friends if they sounded like those folks in the Ghost Recon thing :).

I thought the same thing about the controller. It seemed bulky and unwieldy but all of the videos I've seen they've said it's actually surprisingly comfortable in your hand. I haven't seen anyone mention whether or not the odd placement of the action buttons and right analog control works though.

And of course nobody has played it for an entire day yet so who knows...

Link says it all. Of course this is comparing a next gen console to a current gen console. Who knows what the ps4 will be like.

What do you need a powerful console for again? Are they going to start releasing games for the PS3 you can't play unless you upgrade it or mod it? No? Okay.

When the horseless carriage arrives, I will welcome it with open arms. The Wii U, however, is not the horseless carriage.

You may be right. You may also be wrong. It's too early to say for certain. I'm sure the same thing was said about cars.

Guy one: "You hear about those new horseless carriages...they might revolutionize the way we travel."

Guy two: "These new horseless carriages are useless, I think my horses are the perfect configuration for traveling."

Guy one: "I'm sure they thought the sail boat was perfect prior to the steam engine boat."

Guy two: "When the steam engine boat arrives, I will welcome it with open arms. The horseless carriage, however, is not the steam engine boat."

    We humans are funny.

I think it is more like inventing the Swedish Army knife in a land where there is stuff to cut, but nothing to toothpick, scissor, file, magnify, or clip, or ... etc. You could get by with a knife and unless the other functions start actually getting used.

If the bells and whistles aren't integrated well with the intended purpose of the device; fuck the bells and whistles.

Pretty close to what I was thinking Duk.. also give the swiss army knife a 6 inch LED screen and make it incredibly unwieldy, and I think we have it spot on lol.
